David Montgomery adds power and determination to Bears backfield.

Following a trade up to secure Iowa State running back David Montgomery in the NFL Draft’s third-round Friday night, the Chicago Bears brass spoke glowingly about their new addition.

“He’s just a well-rounded back,” stated Bears General Manager Ryan Pace. “It’s everything you look for in a running back, starting with his instincts, his vision, his ability to make people miss. He’s just a well-rounded player. Good hands. He fits the offense very well.”

According to The Slant…NFL Draft Guide, Montgomery is a “decisive and determined runner who breaks tackles with regularity. Possesses a compact build with good balance and runs with vision, always looking for his next cut or move. Background as a high school quarterback helps him as a receiver. Displays soft hands and catches the ball smoothly. High-character individual who regularly volunteers in the community. Tireless worker…cares deeply about the game. Won’t blow anyone away with his physical makeup or speed, but shows up where it counts…on the field with his performance. Underrated.”

rtable with the total package he brings,” added Pace.

Besides his talent, Montgomery brings a professional, workmanlike approach to his craft and high intangibles. He was a co-captain at Iowa State and known for his community involvement. “There are incredible stories about his work ethic,” Pace said. “Going up to the facility late at night and bringing teammates with him to watch additional tape and get extra work in. You just hear one thing after another about his professional approach to the game, how important it is to him and his work ethic is off the charts and how infectious that was to the entire team there.”

Montgomery joins the aforementioned Davis and Tarik Cohen in a versatile Bears backfield that gives Nagy and quarterback Mitch Trubisky a wealth of options.
