Desperate for help at the wide receiver position, the Chicago Bears trade for Dontrelle Inman adds depth and playmaking skills to a developing offensive unit. The Bears gave up a conditional seventh round pick to San Diego to acquire Inman. In a corresponding roster move, Chicago has released LB Jonathan Anderson.

Inman was stuck behind a stacked group of receivers in San Diego, namely Keenan Allen, Travis Benjamin, and first-round pick Mike Williams, but he flashed big play ability in 2016 when injuries ravaged the Chargers at that position.  He started all 16 games and caught 58 balls for  810 yards and four touchdowns. With Inman in tow, Kendall Wright should have more opportunities in the slot. Teams have stacked the box defensively against Chicago the last several weeks since rookie QB Mitch Trubisky entered the starting line-up, knowing the Bears would most likely employ a conservative game plan focused on running Jordan Howard. If free agent pick-up Markus Wheaton could ever stay healthy and provide a deep threat, Trubisky might be able to show off his strong arm and help diversify the Bears attack.

Inman was scheduled to take a physical upon landing in Chicago. While not impossible, he’s unlikely to see the field in New Orleans Sunday, but should be up to speed to play a role when the Bears return from their bye on November 12 against Green Bay.
