Longtime NFL executive Ernie Acorsi will help the Chicago Bears spearhead the search for a new general manager and ultimately, head coach. Bears Chairman George McCaskey announced the addition of Acorsi as a consultant during a Monday afternoon press conference following the dismissals of both former GM Phil Emery and former coach Marc Trestman.

Acorsi’s track record shows his penchant for sound football judgement. He was responsible for bringing Tom Coughlin to New York to coach the Giants and also was instrumental in the drafting of Eli Manning, John Elway (with the then-Baltimore Colts), and Bernie Kosar in Cleveland during his stint as Browns GM.

The still to be defined search, according to McCaskey and Bears President Ted Phillips, will include the 73 year-old Acorsi being an active participant in interviews along with providing recommendations to Bears brass. Whether Acorsi remains as plugged into the league at his age though is a legitimate question.

That McCaskey was joined by team president Phillips at the news conference was alarming. Many Bears followers perceive Phillips, a accountant turned psuedo football man, as part of the larger problem with the Bears organization. McCaskey professed his family’s faith and support in Phillips, but left open the possibility of restructuring the club’s hiearchy dependent on finding the right candidate(s).

McCaskey said the search would be “done as quickly as possible” but refused to impose a deadline, meaning the Bears could have something in place by the time Championship weekend rolls around or wait for the “right candidate”, possibly enlongating the search.

and took Bears followers behind the curtain, he admitted that his mother, team patriarch Virginia McCaskey, was “pissed off” with the current state of the Bears following a dismal 5-11 season and approved of the firings of Emery and McCaskey.

The termination of offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer was also made official. McCaskey and Phillips mentioned the other assistants, with the exception of quarterback coach Matt Cavanaugh who is no longer under contract, remain property of the Bears but are free to explore other opportunities. It would be a surprise if anyone from the current staff stays once the new head coach is named.

Bear Tracks: The business of football continued amidst the firings. In a formality, the Bears offered reserve/”future” contracts to five members of the practice squad. The move means the players will be signed to contracts once the new league year begins in February. The players are: G Conor Boffeli, LB Jonathan Brown, WR Rashad Lawrence, TE Jacob Maxwell, and T Jason Weaver.
