The Chicago Bears bolstered the depth in their secondary and special teams units, and brought home a local player in the process,  with the signing of former Notre Dame and Baltimore Raven Tom Zbilowski.

“I’ve never been happier,” Zbikowski said.“A lot of people are excited for me to come back here and see me play,” the safety said. “But I told them they all are on their own for tickets.”

The 5-11, 200-pound Zbikowski has appeared in 64 games with 25 starts over five seasons with Baltimore (2008-11) and Indianapolis (2012) recording 89 tackles, three interceptions, eight pass break-ups and two sacks.

returns for 101 yards (6.3 ypr) and 20 kickoff returns for 428 yards (21.4 ypr). He appeared in eight postseason contests gathering four defensive tackles and five kickoff returns for 118 yards (23.6 ypr).

Zbikowski was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the third round (86th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. He attended Buffalo Grove High School.

Zbikowski grew up a huge Bears fan. “They were mean and nasty when I was growing up,” he said. “I really liked watching Gary Fencik play. I can’t wait to get back and shoot it with him. I’ve always wanted to pick his brain about playing the game.”

The Bears have quantity at the safety spot. Behind starters Major Wright and Chris Conte, the team also has last year’s third round pick Brandon Hardin, who missed the season with injury, plus veterans Craig Steltz and Anthony Walters.
