Bears sign veteran safety Nelson to futures contract


The Chicago Bears signed safety Tom Nelson to a reserve / future contract Tuesday.

The 5-11, 200-pound Nelson has appeared in 24 games with three starts over three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals (2009-10) and Philadelphia Eagles (2011), recording 28 tackles, one interception and two passes defensed. A native of Arlington Heights, Illinois, Nelson played collegiately at Illinois State.

Former safety Chris Harris returns to the Bears as a coach

Popular safety Chris Harris, who played two different stints as a Chicago Bear, will be trading his football cleats for a whistle. He was named to the Bears coaching staff Monday as a defensive quality control coach. Known as a student of the game, Harris gets his coaching start as an entry-level coach who will concentrate on breaking down tape and assisting the Bears staff during practices.
