Is Hester a wide receiver or a skilled returner playing wide receiver?

By Columnist Bryan Dietzler

If you haven’t heard, there has been a lot of talk and discussion around just what exactly Devin Hester’s role in the offense is going to be this year.  There are some that seem to think that he has the capability of being a number one wide receiver while there are others that feel he’s a long shot to make it as a number one.  The Bears have tried to integrate him into their offense over the past few seasons but thanks to problems in the passing game they just haven’t been able to get him worked in as much as they would like.

Hester came to the Bears as a cornerback/return specialist and dazzled the world with his ability to return punts and kickoffs for touchdowns making himself a real playmaker.  This gave the Bears a better chance of winning games (thanks to his ability) and made him one of the most influential players in the NFL.

After his initial stellar season, the Bears began to think that Hester’s talents could be used in other ways on the field.  They started trying him out at the wide receiver position little by little but he wasn’t getting the catches that everyone thought that he would get in the offense.  His first year as a wide receiver was definitely below standard and he didn’t turn into the kind of receiver that the Bears thought that he would.

Time went on and Hester continued to be featured in the receiver role and it never turned out the way that the Bears or Hester thought that it would have.  The Bears had problems getting Hester the ball and Hester just never caught on the way that the team hoped that he would have.  He showed flashes of potential but never reached the potential that the Bears had felt they had at the wide receiver position.  Now the Bears and Hester sit at the precipice of wondering exactly what’s going to happen to him from here on out.

At the most, Hester can be used as a specialist type player that comes into the lineup in certain situations to play a certain role.  He can be used as a short yardage option type player that could hit the back of the end zone as an option to throw the ball to and score.  He could also be utilized on short passes to where he could take them for long gains (much like the does on kickoff and punt returns).  The sky is the limit for Hester in this offense but he’s not going be the number one wide receiver that the Bears hoped that he would when it’s all said and done.

Hester has a nice role in the offense and that role may grow a little bit when the new season comes around.  We have to face the fact that he is never going to become a number one wide receiver in the Bear’s offense but can be used as a weapon to help move the ball and score points on a consistent basis.

So what should Hester’s role be in the Bear’s offense?  He could be used as a specialist in certain situations to give the Bears someone to throw the ball to when it’s needed.  He could help move the chains in short yardage

situations and is good enough to make some plays in the red zone.  The Bears can’t really afford to be throwing him bombs unless he can prove that he can get open and run the right route.  This is why he may be good on shorter passes that require that he create something after the catch (which is what he is good at with punt and kickoff returns).

Hester is a weapon that needs to be utilized more often in the Bears offense.  While it’s doubtful he will ever become a number one wide receiver it’s likely that he can become a solid contributor on offense and even become a threat when he is used properly.
