With Chicago Bears training camp set to begin next month and expectations high after a busy off-season, a handful of Bears players will be under the microscope to perform. Let’s examine who might contribute more than expected, as well as those who carry the “overrated tag.”

Underrated:

Former Bears exec Gabriel lands new gig with Eagles

Former  Chicago Bears college scouting director Greg Gabriel landed a new position with the Philadelphia Eagles as the senior college scout.  In his new role, he’ll be responsible for evaluating college players primarily in the Midwest region. Gabriel coordinated the Bears college scouting efforts and draft preparation from 2001 to 2010.

Gabriel’s tenure in Chicago ended when he was let go by ex-Bears General Manager Jerry Angelo in a purge of the player personnel department  following the 2010 season. READ MORE

If you haven’t heard, there has been a lot of talk and discussion around just what exactly Devin Hester’s role in the offense is going to be this year.  There are some that seem to think that he has the capability of being a number one wide receiver while there are others that feel he’s a long shot to make it as a number one.  The Bears have tried to integrate him into their offense over the past few seasons but thanks to problems in the passing game they just haven’t been able to get him worked in as much as they would like.

Hester came to the Bears as a cornerback/return specialist and dazzled the world with his ability to return punts and kickoffs for touchdowns making himself a real playmaker.  This gave the Bears a better chance of winning games (thanks to his ability) and made him one of the most influential players in the NFL.
