The Chicago Bears inked Troy offensive tackle James Brown, who many projected as a mid-round pick, along with ten other undrafted free agents in the wave of signings following the conclusion of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Brown, 6-4, 306, started 38 games at left tackle but struggled in the Senior Bowl against edge rushers and could move to guard. A former junior college player,  he earned All-First team Sun Belt honors his senior year. Brown is a good athlete with solid footwork and movement skills. He possesses long arms, an effective hand punch, and displays good lateral movement. Against better competition in Mobile, Brown looked out of place at tackle though, prompting evaluators to project him inside.

“I’m a better run-blocker,” he said. “I’ve been told that I have a great punch, and that helps me out in the run game and the passing game, too.”

Brown will have a chance to crack the Bears roster, battling veterans Lance Louis, Edwin Williams, Chris Williams, and Chris Spencer along with journeyman Mansfield Wrotto for a spot.

Among the other undrafted free agents signed include:

                                    PLAYER                               POS                     UNIVERSITY

                                    Alvester Alexander                  RB                      Wyoming

                                    James Brown                           T                       Troy

                                    Trevor Coston                          S                       Maine

                                    Terriun Crump                         WR                     Western Illinois

          T                       Albany

                                    Jeremy Jones                           S                       Wayne State

                                    Chris Summers                       WR                     Liberty

                                    Ronnie Thornton                      LB                      Southern Miss

Cameron was his conference’s defensive player of the year and Thornton has some upside at a position the Bears desperately need to add youth in. Jones is an intriguing prospect from a small school who will have to stand out in camp as a special teamer to earn a spot. The Bears kept five undrafted free agents a year ago. It would be surprising to see more than a couple make this year’s final cut. However, with injuries, one never knows.
